Intracellular elemental zinc (Zn) inhibits various RNA viruses including coronaviruses.2 In a 2010 study, Zn coupled with an Zn ionophore (pyrithione), showed potent inhibition of SARSâCoV replication (even at very low micromolar concentrations). Zn directly inhibited the coronaviral RNAâdependent RNA polymerase, which functions as the core enzyme of the RNA viral synthesizing machinery.2 Zn also inhibits SARSâCoV papainâlike protease 2, which is also a key enzyme for viral replication and assembly of functional viral proteins.3 Zn and several Zn chelates were shown to inhibit furin (proprotein convertase) which is important in the pathogenesis of many viruses.4 The furin proteases have been proposed as therapeutic targets for several viral pathogens.5 Specifically, the spike glycoprotein of SARSâCoVâ2 contains a unique furin cleavage site that is not found in SARSâCoV.6 This furin activation mechanism increases the infectivity and pathogenicity of viruses.6 Zn inhibition of host furin in SARSâCoVâ2 infection may be an important antiviral mechanism unique to this novel strain.
Chloroquine has been shown to be a potent Zn ionophore and transports Zn through the cell membrane substantially increasing intracellular levels of Zn, especially in the endosomalâlysosomal compartment.7 These same ionophore properties presumably apply to the closely related molecule, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ).

Trajectory of COVID-19 epidemic in Europe and herd immunity
From this study (not yet peer-reviewed), we read:
«Whatever value is specified for the infection fatality ratio, a model that allows for heterogeneity has better fit to the data than the homogeneity model and supports herd immunity as the main factor underlying the reversal of the epidemic.»
This is compatible with the mounting evidence of pre-existing T-cell immunity against SARS-CoV-2.
Immune cells for common cold may recognize SARS-CoV-2

They found that of the SARS-CoV-2 and âcommon coldâ coronavirus fragments that were most similar (at least 67% genetic similarity) 57% showed cross-reactivity by memory T cells.
The evidence for pre-existing T-cell immunity against Covid-19 keeps piling up, hence the case for a much lower threshold for herd immunity becomes stronger. Conversely, the case for a vaccine becomes way weaker.
Lockdown responsible for excess deaths more than Covid-19?
There’s a lot of analysis on excess deaths, and I have no intention to cover everything. But one thing is clear: the way deaths by Covid-19 have been counted is wrong in most countries. Also, the excess deaths is comparable to that of a bad flu year. Anyhow, this post is about something else: there’s now emerging evidence of something that, to me and many others, is pretty obvious; that is, that the lockdown has caused more excess deaths than the âpandemicâ itself.
This study (Coronial autopsies identify the indirect effects of COVID-19) says:
Of the 67 autopsies done at our hospital during the first 2 months of lockdown, only two autopsies identified COVID-19 that was undiagnosed before death. More frequently, reduced access to health-care systems associated with lockdown was identified as a probable contributory factor (six cases) or possible contributory factor (eight cases) to death.
These causes included potentially preventable out-of-hospital deaths such as acute myocardial infarction and diabetic ketoacidosis, in which patients contacted the health services by telephone and were advised to self-isolate at home rather than attending hospital.
Direct reference to financial or work pressures caused by COVID-19 was identified in three of ten cases of suicide.
Deaths from drug and alcohol misuse significantly increased during the lockdown period in comparison to the same period in 2018 (appendix), but it was not possible to identify whether individual cases were influenced by COVID-19 movement restrictions
Pre-existing T-cell responses in 81% of individuals unexposed to SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19)
This is the second study published in Nature that demonstrates cross-reactive T-cell immunity. I mentioned the other one here.
This one (SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides define heterologous and COVID-19-induced T cell recognition) says:
Cross-reactive SARS-CoV-2 peptides revealed pre-existing T cell responses in 81% of unexposed individuals and validated similarity with common cold coronaviruses, providing a functional basis for heterologous immunity in SARS-CoV-2 infection.Â
Masks make no difference
In Switzerland some provinces have introduced masks, others have not. Result? No difference in the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Ferguson off by a factor of 12
The British epidemiologist Neil Ferguson has produced a Covid-19 death prediction model that has been consistently wrong by a factor of 12.
Sweden destroyed the case for lockdown
If you speak of the Swedish, no-lockdown approach to Covid-19 without disparagement, a horde of midwits will descend on you to say that, actually, Sweden has had a large number of Covid-related deaths compared to its immediate neighbours. Though you can explain that Sweden has had a lower death rate (per million people) than the UK, they will insist you only compare Sweden to the rest of Scandinavia.
But you donât need to compare Sweden to any country to make the crucial observation that lockdowns are not necessary. Lockdowns were introduced because it was believed that they were the only way to prevent cases spiralling out of control, leading to most of the population being infected, health services being overwhelmed and 0.5 to one per cent of the population potentially dying of the disease.
This was not an unreasonable prediction when it was first made. The coronavirus is highly infectious and is several times more lethal than the flu. Case numbers were growing exponentially in March, as were deaths, and Neil Fergusonâs Imperial College model predicted over 250,000 deaths in Britain without lockdown, even with some social-distancing measures.
But when academics adapted Fergusonâs model to Sweden, it predicted 96,000 deaths by the end of June. Ferguson himself said on 25 April that Swedenâs daily deaths would âincrease day by day. It is clearly a decision for the Swedish government whether it wishes to tolerate that.â
In fact, the daily number of deaths had already peaked by then â barely a week after they peaked in Britain â and the cumulative total currently stands at less than 6,000. When a prediction is so far off, it should command attention.
Letâs remember how the Swedish approach was reported at the time. A Guardian headline said on 30 March: ââThey are leading us to catastropheâ: Swedenâs coronavirus stoicism begins to jar.â The Sun on 1 April said Swedenâs ârefusal to enter coronavirus lockdown leaving schools and pubs open âwill lead to catastropheâ, doctors warnâ. And Time magazine warned on 9 April that: âSwedenâs relaxed approach to the coronavirus could already be backfiring.â The report also quoted a head doctor at a major hospital in Sweden saying âthe current approach will âprobably end in a historical massacreââ.
Various post-hoc justifications have been put forward for why things didnât turn out as expected. Since none of them was mentioned by the doomsters back in March, you have to wonder whether this eagerness to show that there is something special and unique about Sweden reflects a genuine yearning for the truth or a pathological desire to promote lockdown at all costs.
The most stupid of these excuses is that Sweden has a low population density(59 people per square mile). Forgive me for insulting your intelligence but it seems some people need to hear this: Swedish people are not evenly spread out across the country. Scotland also has a low population density (65 people per square mile) because most of the country is wilderness. This has not stopped Glasgow becoming a Covid-19 hotspot.
The country with the highest per capita death rate from Covid is Peru, which has a population density only slightly higher than Sweden at 65 people per square mile. Brazil and Chile have also had more deaths per capita than Sweden, despite having low population densities of 65 and 60 people per square mile respectively. Like Sweden, these countries have vast areas in which nobody lives. There is no reason to think that this should help combat the coronavirus.
It is not as if everyone in Sweden lives in little villages, either: 88 per cent of Swedes live in urban areas. This compares with 84 per cent in the UK, 78 per cent in Peru and 81 per cent in Spain. Sweden is one of the most urbanised countries in Europe.
The second post-hoc explanation is that Swedes did actually lock down, but voluntarily. Unless you have a very loose definition of lockdown, this is simply untrue. This is a typical report from the Guardian in late March:
âOutdoors, couples stroll arm in arm in the spring sunshine; Malmöâs cafĂ© terraces do a brisk trade. On the beach and surrounding parkland at Sibbarp there were picnics and barbecues this weekend; the adjoining skate park and playground were rammed. No one was wearing a mask.â
And hereâs Time magazine in April:
âWhen Chloe Fu, 24, went for a run on Monday evening, the streets of Stockholm were filled with people drinking on restaurant patios, enjoying the first warm day of sunshine after a long winter. âWhen you walk around, there is a total and utter absence of panicâ, Fu says, who moved to Sweden from the United States last year: âThe streets are just as busy as they would have been last spring.ââ
This kind of stuff was filmed for TV news reports â thereâs no point denying it. Life was relatively normal in Sweden compared to the countries that locked down. Thatâs not to say that people didnât make changes. There was plenty of social distancing and working from home. Gatherings of more than 50 people were banned and children aged 16 to 18 no longer went to school. The crucial point is that this was sufficient to prevent exponential growth of transmission. It did not require a lockdown.
But, the lockdown aficionados protest, Sweden still had many more deaths than its Nordic neighbours. This is true. Sweden typically has 90,000 deaths a year. It looks like it will have at least 6,000 deaths from Covid-19 this year. Some of those who died would have died this year anyway, but some would not have. But I have never heard a compelling reason why Sweden can only be compared to other Scandinavian countries. What is it about the Nordics that gives them special protection from Covid-19? Salty fish? Elks?
This pandemic is a marathon, not a sprint. The Swedes always accepted that they would see a higher rate of mortality in the spring and summer than countries which locked down early. The argument against lockdown was that every country would see a similar number of deaths in the long run and that it wasnât worth disrupting peopleâs lives and livelihoods in an extreme way by quarantining the entire population. Perhaps the northern hemisphere will keep the virus under control this winter and not enact extreme measures again. But itâs still only September and cases are rising while new restrictions are being added.
There is a world of difference between locking down because itâs the only way to prevent the digging of mass graves and the collapse of your health service and locking down because it might prevent your annual mortality figures being five to 10 per cent higher than an average year. Given the immense cost of lockdown and the knowledge that it only delays the problem, the latter is a much harder sell.
SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell immunity in people that never had Covid-19
For all those who like to dismiss papers when they are either not yet peer-reviewed or published on journals that are not exactly mainstream, here is a paper published in Nature:

In short:
- Covid-19 infection obviously creates T-cell immunity which long lasting and will protect people who recovered from ever getting Covid-19 again
- People who caught SARS-CoV-1 (the first SARS) also have long lasting T-cell immunity (still working 17 years later) that works against Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2)
- Roughly 50% of the tested subjects who never caught either SARS viruses also had T-cell immunity that worked against Covid-19 due to a high degree of homology to the sequences of some proteins common to both SARS-CoV-2 and the common cold coronaviruses.
