I like to develop and maintain some softwares that I really want to keep both free of charge and open source. I’d like to think about new projects and ideas when I sit in front of some food and something to drink. WordPress Plugin: WP-UnitPNGfix

My first (official) plugin for WordPress has been released. The plugin works on img html tags and background attributes to fix the wrong behavior of IE6 (and previous versions) w.r.t. trasparent PNGs. It relies on the Unit PNG fix solution. I wish to thank Claudio for letting me know about it.

A little upgrade for LIBSVM Plus 2.86

While I keep testing the novel kernels I previously mentioned, I decided to upgrade the current package of LIBSVM Plus by adding a slightly modified version of the python tools already provided by original LIBSVM. Plus, I added two scripts originally created by Hsuan-Tien Lin.

On the usability of Wordpress Admin - Episode 1

With its new version 2.5, Wordpress introduced a renewed admin interface, with a completely new style sheet, new menu organization, new placement of form fields, new sidebar widget management, and so forth.
They state an improved usability of the administration interface. It’s not really true.
Let me focus on the new widget management and on the particular task of moving a widget from one sidebar to another. I compare the old way and the new way side by side.

Old way: simply drag and drop the widget from one sidebar to the other one, then save new settings.
New way:

select the sidebar you want to remove the widget
wait for the page refresh
remove the widget
save the settings
wait for the page refresh
select the sidebar you want to add the widget removed from the other sidebar
wait for the page refresh
add the widget
reconfigure the widget as in the sidebar you removed it
save the settings

Well, I do not have to add more words. This is far to be a usability improvement, isn’t it?

New Kernels for LIBSVM Plus

Hello guys, it is not so long that I released LIBSVM Plus, but I am about to release a minor update which introduce new kernels. Some of them are well known in literature and are probabilistic kernels. The other ones are, at the best of my knowlegde, novel kernels and I’ll release them only when I will sure about experimental and theoretical results (but such a stuff is quite complete).

Announcing LIBSVM Plus

LIBSVM Plus is a version of LIBSVM adapted from its head version released on April 1, 2008, i.e. the 2.86 version.

This augmented release of the LIBSVM is mainly born for personal reasons, but I like to share it with the community. LIBSVM Plus will be the basic for the next generation of the Support Vector Clustering (SVC) library, which will replace the SVC software I developed for my master thesis and that will have a lot of new features.

In short, LIBSVM Plus provides you with more kernels and more SVM models. For detailed information, please visit the LIBSVM Plus page.

Wiki for Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition dataset

Recently I set up a wiki web site in order to provide a tool for collecting informations about datasets used for machine learning/patter recognition/data mining experiments.

I do not want to create “yet another dataset repository”. The main goal of WikiSet is to organize informative pages about the datasets, with descriptions, experimental results, etc. The datasets are effectively hosted elsewhere.

You can already create new pages and edit older ones. Only a fast signup is required. Pages with guidelines, suggestion, etc. will be created as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can take a look to the Iris page (the first and - at the moment - the only page in the wiki).

Wordpress 2.3.x and Localization

In WordPress 2.3.x the famous localization problem on 64-bit experienced with WP-2.2.x is solved.

Unfortunately, the fix does not work with if you run Wordpress 2.3.x on PHP >= 5.

So, what is the solution? Well, back in the past and remove the fix for 64 bit systems, as stated here.

I lost 3-4 hours before I figured out that there was a problem.

Why? Well, the problem affects only the localization of themes and plugins, and not the localization of the Wordpress itself.
