However, I don't consider having patches around bad /per se/. If you use some automation like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quilt_%28software%29" rel="nofollow">quilt</a> to manage patches, then patching modules, or even drupal core, becomes quite sustainable.
