Updating the “Software” Page

Time for updates on my Software page. First, it changed name in a more generic Projects. Most important, I am moving away from using this website for hosting packages and projects’ pages. The only project still fully hosted here is Support Vector Clustering, everything else has moved away: Drupal projects on drupal.org, WordPress contribs on WordPress Extend, and everything else on Github or Launchpad, as listed on the new Project page!

Drupal Italia Association

Two days ago I decided to support the Associazione Drupal Italia (Drupal Italia Association), subscribing and becoming a supporter member.

This is to support the guys back in my country who really are dedicated to this platform. Hopefully this association is going to make the Italian Drupal community stronger and larger, and I also hope to stay much more in touch with the Italian community despite living abroad.

Let’s keep in touch guys, and good luck to everyone.

Traction theme translation contribution

Very quick post to inform the 3 readers of my blog that I’ve contributed the Italian translation to Traction, a very nice WordPress theme, available in two flavours: basic (free, which I now use on my Italian blog) and pro (to be paid).

Since the author maintains the translation via GitHub, I just forked a branch that has already been merged back by Drew Strojny.

So, in the very rare case you are both Italian and want also use that theme on an Italian blog for Italian people, well, you are ready to go!

Drupal and its community issues

I love Drupal. I really do, even if many people do not understand why (one day I will explain to you what you don’t see, guys). I’ve been working with it since the version 4.6. Then, during the 2008/09 I stopped for like a year (for many reasons that are not worth to be told), but eventually I came back aboard, and now I am also the “specialist in charge” for this platform at Ibuildings.

For a long time I never had the chance to contribute “seriously” (just some little patches here and there) in the community, but now different working conditions allow me to do so. This brought to my attention some issues in the community attitude. And when it comes to social attitudes, I am not an easy person to deal with when I get disappointed.

LIBSVM Plus 2.9.1 is out

A minor release for LIBSVM Plus is out, just to introduce an experimental support for compiling the code on Windows machine. The patch has been provided by Vladislavs Dovgalecs, from the Université Bordeaux I in France.

Please, refer to the “Windows” section within the README.plus file to know how to compile the library on Windows using Visual Studio.

LIBSVM Plus 2.9 is out

Back on the 1st of November 2009, Chang and Lin released the version 2.9 of the well known LIBSVM library. A couple of months laster, I have finally found the time to backport the changes in my LIBSVM Plus, now at the 2.9 version as well.

The backport this time was very easy, because there were no major changes. Python tools have been updated as well, and now they should work with Python 3 too.

On the “Plus” side no changes have been made, except some tiny bug fixes. One note, that you will find also at the bottom of the LIBSVM Plus page, is that now LIBSVM Plus is hosted on Github too.

Enjoy, test, and report!

PS: at the risk of losing credibility, I’ll remark, once again, my intention to rewrite this software. I swear I have made a decision this time: it is going to be rewritten in Go. I have already started playing with the language (soon some posts about it) and designing the new software.

Programmatic CCK Content Types: why my way?

A few days ago, I have announced the Alternate Content Copy module, which hopefully is going to be accepted on the Drupal.org project repository (as soon as I submit it).

In that article I explained the general reasons why those modifications should be part of the official Content Copy module.

Now, I do realise that Fields in D7 might be so different that everything I am about to say could not make any sense in the near future. However, I would like, with this article, to explain why the programmatic update of CCK content types does benefit of my modifications.

Programmatic CCK Content Types – Updated

Not long ago, I published a HowTo for creating CCK Content Types programmatically, including the ability of updating them via code. After some events, the HowTo needed an update, as it now (necessarily) depends on the Alternate Content Copy module.

CCK – Alternate Content Copy

Eventually, markus_petrus did not want to change the current behaviour of the CCK Content Copy module. Therefore, out of box, it won’t allow you to use my way to get CCK content type done programmatically (well, not including the update of them). But let’s forget about this for now. Let’s focus on CCK and the Content Copy module.
